Hey, sorry that I haven't posted this sooner but my computer shit the bed on my. New hard drive is in place, 300 Gigs of video lost. Oh well, those things happen. Anyway, here's some news from the BREC community planning meeting.
First off there was a great turnout at the meeting despite the fact that it was held mid-afternoon on a Tuesday. There were PLENTY of BMX riders in attendance that made sure the representatives from SITE development knew our opinions and concerns.
The guys from SITE development had 3 sample plans up for everyone to look at. They were all similar in size (15,000 sq. ft.) but were very different in layout. The first plan was a skate plaza with a lot of rails, banks and ledges. The second plan had a little more tranny but was still very street-skating oriented. The final plan had about equal amounts of street obstacles and transitions. Overall this plan was the one everyone decided was the best, but it is just an example, not the actual park that will be built.
Plan C
SITE also had a slideshow ready to show off some of their work. Their parks include The Black Pearl in the Cayman Islands, Tony Hawk's backyard and the DC Skate Plaza in Ohio.
After they showed us their work and the different plans they let us layout some different obstacles on our own. This was really cool because everyone was able to get involved, even though the plans were a little hard to understand.
Different obstacles for the group layouts.
The next step in the process is pretty straight-forward. SITE is compiling all of the information from the meeting in order to find out what the locals want in a park. They will come up with 2 plans for the park in Baton Rouge. In 3 weeks they will present the plans to us at a meeting with BREC officials where we will decide on which park to build. From there BREC will post the construction job and start taking bids (SITE doesn't build the park, they just design them).
In the meantime SITE will be creating a website for the Perkins Road project. You will be able to log in and share your ideas on the park planning process. As of right now the site isn't up, but when it is I will post the name and password you need in order to log in and give them feedback. If you just want to check out their work click
